Social Presence of Saudi EFL Learners

On Monday, November 16, 2015, Dr. Ali Alamir, the Vice Dean, delivered a presentation titled "Saudi EFL Students' Perceptions toward the Online Interactions of their Peers and Instructors." The focus of Dr. Alamir's presentation was to examine how Saudi students perceive and evaluate the online interactions of their peers and instructors in order to enhance their second language (L2) learning in online educational discussion forums.

Spelling Bee

The Spelling Bee competition for English major students from levels one and two took place on Tuesday, November 3rd, in Auditorium 5. The event attracted a large audience, with the auditorium nearly filled to capacity. Around 30 students participated in the first round, and as the competition progressed, contestants were eliminated until only three remained. The words used in the competition were chosen from a predetermined list of 275 words, ranging from one-syllable to three-syllable words, with increasing difficulty in each round.

The inauguration ceremony for the new English Club Headquarters located in room A/3/35 was held under the patronage of Dr. Abdullah Al-Melhi, the Dean of the Faculty of Languages and Translation. The event was attended by Dr. Nasir Qemishan, the Vice Dean for Student Activities, and Mr. Yasir Salimy, the Director of Student Clubs. Pragmatic Equivalents in Translation

Dr. Eyhab Bader Eddin, a Lecturer at the Faculty of Languages and Translation (clt), delivered a keynote presentation on November 2, 2015, focusing on the topic of Translation titled 'Pragmatic Equivalents in Translation.' Dr. Bader Eddin commenced his presentation with an insightful introduction, highlighting the importance of communication-based speech act events in our daily lives and our subconscious connection to the field of Pragmatics throughout history.

TOEFL CBT

The Faculty of Languages and Translation recently introduced a computer-based test (CBT) for the 1st Midterm Exam in the International Test Preparation (ITP) Course. This marked a significant milestone as it was the first time such a test format was implemented for the ITP Course. Matthew Paul and Hassan Costello played integral roles in the development, administration, and supervision of the CBT.

Applying the QM Rubric

Mohsin Raza Khan, the clt E-Learning Supervisor, conducted a seminar focused on utilizing the Quality Matters (QM) rubric for the design, implementation, and proctoring of E-Learning courses. The seminar specifically highlighted his application of the Eight General Standards to the ENG 011 Intensive English Course, for which he received recognition from the International Quality Matters Peer Review Board.
