Under the supervision of Dean Dr. Abdullah Al-Melhi, the Faculty of Languages and Translation (clt) recently partnered with the College of Applied Medical Sciences (CAMS) to offer a comprehensive two-day workshop focusing on 'Medical Terminology.' The training was ably conducted by Mr. Naser Alhawamdeh, Mr. Javed Ahmad, Mr. Salahud Din Abdul Rab, and Mr. Mohsin Raza Khan.

This intensive workshop, which ran from April 18 to 19, 2017, sought to equip CAMS students across various departments with a firm understanding of critical medical terminologies. Mr. Naser Alwawamdeh opened the proceedings with a session that offered an essential overview of key medical terms and discussed general strategies for effective learning.

The baton was then passed to Mr. Javed Ahmad, who navigated the linguistic labyrinth of medical terminologies during his in-depth presentation. He brought to light the fascinating etymological roots of these terms in Greek and Latin, and proffered practical solutions to common challenges encountered in learning this specialized language. Participants were encouraged to leverage interactive worksheets as a means to streamline the acquisition of these terminologies.

Day two kicked off with Mr. Mohsin Raza Khan introducing the morphological and phonological nuances of medical language. Through engaging cooperative learning activities, Mr. Khan cemented the participants' theoretical understanding of medical vocabulary, rounding off his insightful talk with a rundown of standard abbreviations in the medical field.

Mr. Salahud Din Abdul Rab rounded out the second day's sessions with an exploration of the semantic and syntactic dimensions of medical discourse. Using the contextual usage of medical lexis as his launching pad, Mr. Abdul Rab effectively classified and categorized medical terminology according to the various medical specialties.

Dr. Abdullah Al-Melhi emphasized the value of such service learning initiatives, noting that they offer students an unparalleled opportunity to immerse themselves in community service activities and enrich their learning experience. He underlined the importance of students transferring these experiences to their academic and professional growth. Throughout the workshop, educational resources, including handouts and worksheets, were disseminated to the students.

The workshop drew to a close with heartfelt words of thanks from Dr. Ali Ajab Al-Shahrani, CAMS Student Activities Club Director. He expressed his gratitude to the clt, represented by its faculty members, for their successful execution of this interactive workshop, recognizing the presenters' significant contributions with certificates of appreciation.
