The Translation Unit (TU) of our Faculty of Languages and Translation hosted a translation competition entitled "Translator of the Nation" on February 22, 2022. This event was part of the faculty's commemoration of Saudi Arabia's 'Founding Day.' Contestants were tasked with translating a series of journalistic texts pertaining to this noteworthy national celebration.

The competition saw enthusiastic participation from both our MA and BA students across various campuses. Their engagement underscored the significance of the Founding Day and demonstrated the TU's role in bridging cultural and linguistic gaps, particularly by translating local events from Arabic into English. A key objective of this competition was to help students enhance their translation skills, an aim that was reflected in the over 50 texts submitted by our students.

Several winners shared their thoughts about the competition. Abdulaziz Alalawi, for instance, saw his participation as an act of service to his country and expressed gratitude to the TU for facilitating the opportunity. Abeer Alasmari praised the competition as a patriotic initiative that stirred passion in the participating translators.

Jamilah Shah viewed the competition as an educational endeavor with national significance, and emphasized that success is about preparation and learning, regardless of winning or losing. Asma Hassan found the contest to be a confidence-boosting exercise that encouraged her to continue honing her translation skills. Waad Al-Manea underscored the competition as an enriching university experience that encourages motivation more than competition.

We'd like to extend our gratitude and appreciation to all participants in the "Translator of the Nation" competition. The winners of the competition are as follows:

  • 1st place (500 SR): Abdulaziz Alalawi/MA Translation
  • 2nd place (400 SR): Abeer Alasmari/MA Translation
  • 3rd place (300 SR): Jamilah Sanagul/MA Translation
  • 4th place (200 SR): Waad Al-Manea/MA Translation
  • 5th place (shared) (100 SR each): Nujud Aseeri & Asma Alfuraih/both MA Translation

The award ceremony, held on March 22, 2022, was a jubilant event organized by the Guidance and Counselling Unit and English Club at the Faculty of Languages and Translation. Winners were honored with cash prizes and certificates of appreciation. To recognize their efforts, all participants were also awarded certificates of appreciation, serving as a motivation to further develop their translation talents and skills.
