Faculty Member Delivers Session on Annotated Translation

Dr. Eyhab Bader Eddin has launched a new initiative focusing on "Annotated Translation," a subject that, while intriguing and complex, has gained increasing attention for its use as a primary assessment method for translation students at both undergraduate and graduate levels. During a session open to the public in the Spring 2021 semester, he discussed the distinction and interchangeability of 'annotated translation' and 'translation commentary.'

In a session that lasted two hours, entitled "Annotated Translation: Showing Students the Ropes," Dr. Bader Eddin presented the fundamentals of the topic. He drew attendees' attention to the influential book, "Translation Commentary: The Art Revisited," by Sewell in 2002, which was one of the first comprehensive works devoted to this subject.

In his presentation, Dr. Bader Eddin addressed several aspects of annotated translation, including its definition, desirable and undesirable features, the criteria for marking a translation commentary, steps for initiating a translation annotation project, and the presentation of illustrative practical examples. His approach, characterized by connecting theory to practice, is a rare feature in translation studies.

To ensure that attendees comprehended the content of the session, he assigned exercises related to the topics discussed. This initiative by Dr. Bader Eddin is an effort to shed more light on an important aspect of translation studies that is increasingly gaining prominence in the academic field.
