On November 15, 2021, the College of Languages and Translation's Alumni Unit, coordinated by Mohsin Raza Khan, hosted a webinar featuring Dr. Eisa Al-Eisa Asiri. Fresh from his stint at Macquarie University in Australia, Dr. Asiri spoke to an audience of 107 about the crucial transition from the classroom to the workplace, focusing on essential professional skills for translation and interpreting students. This webinar is part of the ongoing effort to offer students and alumni additional avenues for professional development, aligning with the intended learning outcomes and evolving labor market trends.

Dr. Asiri initiated the discussion by soliciting suggestions from the student attendees on how to attain advanced knowledge in translation and interpreting. The responses were diverse and intriguing, with one student proposing formal education in translation or interpreting as the best approach. Dr. Asiri concurred with this sentiment, adding that being an enthusiastic reader and writer of both source and target texts, as well as possessing profound cultural knowledge, are equally vital.

In his presentation, Dr. Asiri drew attention to practical concepts such as translation memory—recalling previously translated phrases or sentences for reference during new translation tasks. He also encouraged utilizing technological tools available for translators and interpreters, noting that professionals in the field often employ computer-assisted translation tools and explore various programs.

Moreover, Dr. Asiri emphasized the importance of an entrepreneurial mindset for students preparing to enter the translation industry. He detailed the advantages and disadvantages of working with agencies, direct clients, and using portals, urging students to maintain an updated resume at all times. To further enhance their career prospects, he suggested networking and participating in events, conferences, and expos, regardless of their direct relevance to the translation sector.
