Program Overview
Welcome to the Ph.D. in Applied Linguistics program at the College of Languages and Translation, King Khalid University. This rigorous program offers a deep exploration of linguistic theories, research methodologies, and contemporary applications of language study. Graduates develop advanced expertise across multiple areas, including second language acquisition, language technology, discourse analysis, and more.
The Ph.D. in Applied Linguistics program is structured around six progressive levels that collectively build advanced expertise in linguistic theories, second language acquisition, and language assessment. The journey begins with a solid theoretical foundation (Level 1), covering advanced topics in applied linguistics, research methods, and academic writing. As students progress to Level 2, they engage with language acquisition, explore modern technologies in language learning, and delve into advanced issues in psycholinguistics.
The curriculum then shifts to applied research (Level 3), focusing on applied statistics and language assessment, along with elective courses in language policy or sociolinguistic research. Moving into pre-dissertation work (Level 4), students concentrate on designing a PhD dissertation and second language teaching approaches, complemented by electives in curriculum design or discourse analysis. Finally, in the dissertation phase (Levels 5-6), candidates synthesize their knowledge through a 12-credit doctoral thesis, applying their accumulated skills and theoretical insights to an original research question within the field of applied linguistics.
