This study investigates the effectiveness of gamification in motivating middle-aged learners of English as a foreign language in Jordan and enhancing their vocabulary acquisition. Sixty participants were randomly divided into an experimental group, which used a gamified vocabulary app incorporating interactive games, quizzes, and competitive elements over a six‐week period, and a control group. Pre- and post-tests were administered to measure vocabulary gains, while questionnaires and interviews assessed changes in motivation. The study aimed to address the significant challenges faced by middle-aged learners in acquiring new vocabulary despite the increasing necessity of English for academic, professional, and social advancement.
Results revealed that the group exposed to gamified instruction experienced notable improvements in vocabulary retention and acquisition compared to the control group. The interactive and engaging nature of the gamified approach appeared to enhance learner motivation and facilitate more effective language learning. These findings suggest that integrating gamification strategies into language teaching can serve as a powerful tool to overcome age-related learning barriers and improve vocabulary development among middle-aged learners.
