Perceptions of Saudi EFL teachers on the adequacy of textbooks

The paper titled "Perceptions of Saudi EFL Teachers on the Adequacy of Textbooks" primarily focuses on evaluating the effectiveness of the "We Can Series" textbooks used in Saudi Arabian elementary schools from the perspectives of male and female EFL teachers. The study aims to assess the adequacy of these textbooks in terms of layout and design, objectives, teaching methods, language skills, and general evaluation.

The purpose of the study is to analyze Saudi EFL teachers' views on the adequacy of the "We Can Series" textbooks, which are integral to the English language curriculum in Saudi elementary schools. The research specifically investigates how these textbooks meet educational goals, align with students' needs, and contribute to the overall learning process.

Methodologically, the study employs a quantitative research approach, gathering data through a questionnaire adapted from previous studies. The questionnaire, distributed online to 51 primary school teachers, includes 49 items covering five evaluation criteria. The responses were collected via a Google Forms survey and analyzed using a 5-point Likert scale.

Key findings of the study indicate that while the "We Can Series" textbooks are generally well-received in terms of layout, design, and the inclusion of clear objectives, there are significant concerns about their alignment with students' needs. The textbooks were found lacking in the logical progression of topics, the quantity of lessons, and the availability of supplemental materials. The study also highlights issues with cohesion and sequencing across the series, suggesting that the textbooks could benefit from revisions to better meet learners' needs.

In conclusion, the study underscores the potential of the "We Can Series" as an effective EFL resource but emphasizes the need for substantial revisions to enhance their suitability for Saudi Arabian elementary education. The authors recommend revising objectives and exercises, increasing lesson frequency, ensuring logical topic progression, and developing additional materials like test models to improve the series' effectiveness. The research offers valuable insights for curriculum designers and material developers, aiming to refine and improve the quality of EFL textbooks in Saudi Arabia.
