Program Description (Ph.D. in Applied Linguistics)

The Ph.D. in Applied Linguistics program at the College of Languages and Translation at King Khalid University is designed to advance students' knowledge and skills in various areas of applied linguistics, with a strong emphasis on language teaching, second language acquisition, and language assessment. The program begins with foundational courses that cover the theories and schools of linguistics, as well as language structure. As students progress, they delve into advanced academic reading and writing, explore advanced topics in applied linguistics, and participate in seminars focused on second language acquisition and teaching.

The program also includes courses on methods of language assessment, current issues in language and technology, and issues specific to Arabic applied linguistics. Further into the program, students will study advanced discourse analysis and learn about designing and constructing research work. A course on applied statistics in language research is provided to help students prepare for the rigorous research component of the program. The culmination of the Ph.D. experience is an independent seminar and the completion of a thesis, where students have the opportunity to apply their acquired knowledge and skills to a specific research question in the field of applied linguistics.
