This study explores the impact of heritage language maintenance on identity formation among immigrant youth, emphasizing the roles of family language practices and community support. Utilizing quantitative methods, it examines the connection between heritage language proficiency and cultural and ethnic identity, highlighting how regular family language use fosters linguistic and cultural ties. Results show that immigrant youth with strong family support for heritage language retention exhibit enhanced identity development, feeling more connected to their cultural roots.
The study also notes the influence of community-driven initiatives, such as language schools and cultural festivals, which provide additional support but are less impactful than family practices. Findings underscore the importance of both family and community support in heritage language retention, fostering a sense of belonging within immigrant communities. The paper suggests that encouraging family-based language practices and community support can strengthen cultural identity, proposing further research on long-term impacts of heritage language proficiency on immigrant identity.
