The title of the paper is "The Effects of Teachers’ In-Class Motivational Intervention on Learners’ EFL Achievement." The primary focus of this study is to investigate the impact of teachers' motivational strategies on the motivation and achievement of students learning English as a foreign language (EFL) in Saudi Arabia.
The purpose of the study is to empirically validate the effectiveness of specific motivational strategies employed by teachers in the classroom on improving both the motivation and the academic performance of EFL learners. The scope includes identifying the most influential motivational strategies and assessing their impact through a controlled quasi-experimental design.
The methodology involved a two-stage approach. In the first stage, 204 EFL teachers were surveyed to identify the most valued motivational strategies. In the second stage, 437 Saudi EFL learners and 14 teachers were divided into experimental and control groups. The experimental group was exposed to specific motivational strategies over a 10-week period, while the control group continued with regular instruction. Data were collected through classroom observations, questionnaires, and achievement tests, and were analyzed using statistical methods such as analysis of covariance and mediation analysis.
The key findings revealed that the motivational interventions led to a significant increase in learner motivation in the experimental group, which subsequently resulted in higher academic achievement compared to the control group. The study demonstrated that specific motivational strategies, such as building positive student-teacher relationships and reducing language anxiety, were particularly effective in enhancing both motivation and achievement.
In conclusion, the study highlights the critical role of teacher-initiated motivational strategies in fostering better learning outcomes in EFL contexts. The findings suggest that implementing these strategies can lead to meaningful improvements in student motivation and performance, providing practical insights for EFL educators.
