Multicultural diverse classroom; addressing the instructional challenges and reflections, from a teacher’s perspective

The paper titled "Multicultural Diverse Classroom: Addressing the Instructional Challenges and Reflections, from a Teacher's Perspective" focuses on the personal experience and observations of teaching in a multicultural and diverse English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classroom. The primary aim of this reflective study is to explore how individual cultures impact students' learning and how different cultures interact both positively and negatively in an EFL setting. 

The study's purpose is to develop strategies to meet the learning needs of students from various cultural backgrounds in an EFL academic environment. The research methodology involves the author's personal observations and interactions with a group of approximately 40 students aged 16-20 from diverse nationalities (including Saudi Arabian, Yemeni, Algerian, Egyptian, Syrian, Sudanese, Palestinian, Indian, Pakistani, and Burmese) in an Intensive English course at King Khalid University in Saudi Arabia.

Key findings include the identification of two major student groups - Arabs and non-Arabs - who exhibit different behaviors and learning styles based on their cultural backgrounds. The study highlights various challenges faced by teachers in multicultural classrooms, including addressing diverse groups, understanding individual cultures and behaviors, developing appropriate teaching strategies and materials, and comprehending various learning styles.

The paper concludes by emphasizing the crucial role of teachers in managing diverse classrooms effectively. It recommends that teachers develop a deep understanding of different cultures, create a positive and inclusive classroom environment, employ cooperative learning techniques, maintain unbiased behavior, and adapt teaching methods to accommodate various learning styles. The study also suggests that educational institutions should provide support and resources for teachers to enhance their skills in managing multicultural classrooms.
