The College of Languages and Translation is launching an innovative "Chinese Language Basics" program, offering members of the public an opportunity to immerse themselves in Chinese language and culture. Starting on November 17, 2024, the program aims to equip participants with essential skills in reading, writing, listening, and speaking Mandarin Chinese.

This initiative is being championed with the support of the Research Consulting Studies Institute. Dr. Ahmad Ismail Assiri, Dean of the College of Languages and Translation, emphasized the program's significance. "In today's interconnected world, understanding the Chinese language and culture is increasingly valuable," he stated. "We are excited to offer this opportunity to the wider community, fostering cross-cultural communication and enhancing professional prospects."

Spanning 36 hours over two months, the program offers an interactive learning experience that covers pronunciation of Chinese consonants, vowels, and tones; learning and accurately writing Chinese characters; practical communication skills such as introducing oneself and family members, using numbers, and discussing hobbies; cultural exploration of significant historical figures, geography, and practices of China; and real-life applications like booking hotel rooms, navigating transportation, and discussing daily activities in Chinese.

To accommodate participants' varied schedules, the program offers multiple time slots. Classes are held in person at the College of Languages and Translation, 1.5 hours per day, three days a week. Participants can choose between sessions on Sunday, Monday, and Wednesday or Sunday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, with early sessions from 4:00 PM to 5:30 PM and later sessions from 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM.

The program is open to everyone interested in learning Chinese, regardless of prior experience. Participants are expected to attend all training sessions and engage in practical exercises. The course fee is SAR 2,000.

Led by faculty and staff with international experience and qualifications, the program ensures high-quality instruction. "Our educators bring a wealth of global expertise," noted Dr. Assiri. "Their insights will enrich the learning experience and provide participants with a solid foundation in the language."

An essential component of the program is its focus on cultural exchange. Participants will learn to introduce the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Asir region in Chinese, promoting mutual understanding and appreciation between cultures.

Interested individuals can register by clicking here or by accessing the program's infographic, which includes a QR code linking directly to the registration page.

The College of Languages and Translation's introduction of the Chinese Language Basics program reflects a commitment to expanding linguistic offerings and enhancing global competencies within the community. As China's influence continues to grow, proficiency in Mandarin becomes an increasingly valuable asset.

"By offering this program to the public, we're investing in the future of international collaboration and personal development," concluded Dr. Assiri. "We look forward to welcoming participants from all backgrounds."
