English Club Sponsors Workshop on Figurative Language
Dr. Ahlullah Siddiqui led an engaging seminar on similes, metaphors, and idioms, hosted by the Faculty of Languages and Translation (clt) and the English Club. The event saw a remarkable turnout with attendees not only from the clt but also from other colleges. The seminar aimed to shed light on the significance of figurative language in the learning of English.
Dr. Siddiqui initiated the discussion by elucidating the various categories of figurative expressions in English. He underlined that elements like metaphors, similes, and idioms serve to enhance the appeal and vivacity of otherwise mundane language or subjects. "Figurative language adorns standard, everyday English, transforming it into a unique and stimulating medium. It allows the speaker or writer to infuse their individual flair into the language," he explained. He emphasized that figurative language often makes topics more relatable, thus facilitating a more profound understanding.
The discussion then progressed toward other types of figurative language, such as hyperbole and irony, among others. Dr. Siddiqui emphasized that such expressive elements introduce emotion, emphasis, and a memorable stylistic or poetic touch to important concepts or points. "Vivid language stimulates thought and emotions, lending richness to our language and engaging the audience. I am thrilled to explore the more arcane aspects of the English language with you all and would urge you to constantly hone your skills and linguistic prowess," he concluded.
Following the primary presentation, the audience partook in an interactive exercise designed to clarify the differences among various forms of figurative language. The students unraveled the implicit meanings in phrases like "time is money" and "icing on the cake". Upon completion of the exercise, Dr. Siddiqui, along with the attendees, collectively reviewed the figurative language elements.
A special acknowledgment was extended to Mr. Faisal Al Fadhil, the Director of the English Club, and his team for their efforts in organizing the event.
