Multimedia Assisted Language Learning (MMALL) Facilitating L2 Listening Comprehension in an EFL Classroom
On April 3, 2018, a seminar was held at King Khalid University's Faculty of Languages and Translation, featuring Dr. Abdulrahman Almosa as the presenter. The subject matter was based on Dr. Almosa's dissertation titled "Multimedia Assisted Language Learning (MMALL) Facilitating L2 Listening Comprehension in an EFL Classroom." He provided insights into the challenges students face in understanding spoken language and how MMALL can serve as a solution.
Dr. Almosa's main objective was to explore the efficacy of multimedia-assisted learning modalities in enhancing listening comprehension within the context of teaching English as a foreign language in Saudi Arabia. He defined modalities as diverse forms of technology that generate a multimedia environment, such as video displays offering transcripts.
The empirical study, conducted on Saudi elementary students, indicated notable differences between the pre-test and post-test results. The data provided compelling evidence that audio-visual modalities, specifically captioned videos, proved more effective in improving students' comprehension than those devoid of captions.
Dr. Almosa explained how multimedia modalities could enable students to overcome frequent comprehension difficulties. The presence of corresponding transcripts, he added, could also enhance learners' linguistic proficiency, which, in turn, contributes significantly to overall comprehension.
The seminar was not only enlightening but also successful in promoting an understanding of the transformative potential of multimedia modalities in language learning.
